In this fun activity to explore theme and real world connections, students will form groups of five and establish roles: either the "Dealer" or a "Player". The "Dealer" will distribute poker chips to the players who must "pay" their opinion back to dealer once he or she poses a discussion question. Then the dealer checks off the contribution on an easy-to-chart scorecard. Once everyone in the group has contributed five times, they've gambled all of their chips away but walk away from the table with new ideas about the book and life!
This activity is great to use for Into the Wild or any novel if you want to spice up small group discussions! You can use poker chips, beans, or any piece of relia.
