Prefix and Suffix
Students will determine the meaning of the new word formed when a known prefix is added to a known word (e.g., happy/unhappy, tell/retell).
Spark engagement and build vocabulary skills with this high interest affix center game. Use in pairs or Kagan teams (2-6 players).
Students will acquire fluency with affixes while using their "light saber" to slash the affixes from unfamiliar words. Then the students will record their thinking and discuss the meaning of the word parts with their group while finding the meaning of the "Star Word."
: teacher instruction page, student instruction page, Jedi Word Alliance page (Teacher's helper, 2 per sheet), 40 colored word cards, 40 black and white word cards, paper recording sheet for assessment or accountability in centers, optional card backs in color or ink saver version.
Print and go for use with assessment page for accountability.
Provide dry erase markers for multiple use. Place a piece of paper in a sheet protector in a sheet protector if dry erase boards are in short supply.
