This letter recognition activity is cute, colorful, and concrete!
Using yarn or heavy cord, string up a long child-height "clothesline".
Cut back the edges on 2 straight lines and fold on the dotted line. You've got laundry! There are 26 "sets" of clothes (either a shirt and skirt or a shirt and shorts) that go together due to their matching designs and matching uppercase and lowercase letters. This activity can be implemented in the 6 ways listed in the directions for letter recognition, alphabetical order, and lower/uppercase matching.
Versatile and easy to use with classroom centers, whole class, small groups, or individuals. Also makes a great manipulative bulletin board.
Instead of hanging the letters on a "clothesline", the children can stand the folded pieces on a surface. If you would like the pieces to be sturdier, just cut out some strips of heavier paper like cardboard (they don't have to be the whole width of the letter card-I've done this with strips that were only 1.5 inches wide). The strips should be as long as the unfolded letter cards. Glue onto the back of the cards.
