This early literacy French Immersion program was designed to blend the learning of a new language simultaneously with the learning of printing, reading, and writing in an interesting, motivating fashion to engage young learners. The SmartBoard file focuses on understanding the letters in terms of their shapes. 5 simple shapes (straight lines, circles, arcs, and dots) are cloned for SmartBoard manipulation. This kinesthetic, tactile approach engages the student and consolidates the learning. The accompanying Printing Booklet focuses on 26 nouns, 1 for each letter, to practice printing skills while learning new vocabulary. The line drawings encourage students to "complete" the picture with colour and details that could also be used as writing prompts. "Écrire pour lire 2 and 3" continues the learning with more focus on reading and writing a simple sentence, based on the 26 nouns from book 1.
The updated version has several posters and 26 QR Voice Codes that can be used with iPads, Cell Phones, and iPods with any QR Code Reader app. This allows students ample opportunity to hear the new vocabulary and use the initial sound to read the new words. The most popular activity in my classroom!
