Producers, Consumers, and Decomposers: Reading Passage and Card Sorting Project
This lesson plan uses very high-quality pictures of producers, consumers and decomposers, including a selection of interesting plants and animals to engage and teach students how to classify plants and animals according to their roles in food chains.
The lesson also includes a reading passage which introduces the students to how energy is transferred through food chains, This interesting and engaging reading passage introduces the students to the concept of food chains and the roles organisms play in a food chain. Questions and answers are included.
We’ve designed this unit with fun and interesting activities to introduce your class to the different classification of plants and animals in an interesting and engaging way. We hope you find this unit helpful.
What you will get in this product:
1. An illustrated reading passage
explaining the classifications the students will be using. Questions on the passage are included at the end with an answer key to the teacher. The reading passage is designed to give students the information they will need for their card sort project.
2. Fifty cards of plants and animals for students to sort into the right classifications.
Cards contain the name of the plant or animal and information on what they eat or how the get their energy. Students must use these clues to correctly classify the plant or animal
as a producer, consumer (carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, or scavenger), or decomposer.
3. Who Am I? PowerPoint Presentation
This fourteen-slide presentation is designed to walk your students through the card sort, displaying the six categories of the sort. In addition, the teacher can then display the answers to the sort and engage student questions and discussion.
