In small groups, students collaborate to answer the driving question: Is Nationalism a Positive Force or a Negative Force?
Students complete the inquiry-based questions pertaining to the role of nationalism in both unification (Germany, Italy, various countries in Asia) and division (Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires).
Upon completion, each group is tasked with creatively teaching their assigned portion of the project to the rest of the class. I utilized a 'whiteboard project' format for this activity - groups planned and created brief stop-motion film clips in order to share their findings with the class and subsequently demonstrate their collective learning.
Afterwards, we debriefed with a class discussion before moving forward to study modern nationalism in the form of ISIS and other groups that are connected to its modern day application (where for unification or division).
