Product Description
I used comic books to enhance some of the issues covered in my Novel class. Students are in groups but work on individual tasks during the project. Each comic has a social justice issue that the students are responsible for identifying. The comics I use cover gentrification, slavery, homosexuality, corruption, sexism, Islamaphobia, gender norms, and criminal justice. This pack includes step by step directions for each task, a few group assignments, and one assessment. I usually run through how to read a comic book first (gutters, panels, etc.) before allowing them to choose the comic they want to read with their group. Once they have done that they pick one of the following tasks to complete:

Project manager: The project manager is responsible for making sure the project is successful. The project manager is responsible for the following tasks:
• Make project timeline
• Meet with teacher each class period to discuss project progress
• Keep a physical or electronic journal of the group’s progress discussing strengths, challenges and what is being completed each day
• Serve as an ally or helping hand for all group members
• Get a tri-fold
Researcher: The researcher is responsible for gathering information about the social justice topic of your comic book and creating an essay discussing the following topics. The essay must be at least five pages in length, double spaced, one-inch margins with correct grammar. Include works cited page with your essay. Please answer the following prompts:
• What are the statistics of your social justice issue?
• What specific communities are most impacted and why?
• What impact does it have on the country as a whole?
• What is the variation in struggle among different states in the USA?
• Give at least five credible sources addressing the issue (book, journal, documentary, etc.)
Non-profit Organizer: Organizers are responsible for creating a non-profit organization. This includes a summary analysis of what already exists, a one-page mission statement, and a detailed business plan (charts, projections, etc.)
Social Media Connoisseur: The connoisseur is responsible for creating a social media campaign (YouTube channel, twitter, snapchat, etc.) This campaign includes analysis of different platforms, the target audience, a one-page write-up detailing the long/short term goals, a list of ways to foster online engagement, a list of brand content, and organizing one major event online. (This campaign can be done soft-tech as well)
Podcast Director: The director is responsible for creating an original podcast segment. The director can interview other members once they become well versed in their topic. The director is responsible for creating a loose script, appropriate questions for all interviewees, creating cover art, a title, and a theme song. The director will also need to find the best source for posting a podcast and create a direction sheet detailing how to share podcasts with the world.
Illustrator: The illustrator is responsible for creating a unique comic strip rooted in one social justice issue. The illustrator should be hyper aware of the content and format to meet all the requirements. Analysis is crucial to creating an authentic comic strip.
