I created this project for my Environmental Science class for the Aquatic Ecosystem unit. Using the internet, students will research each of the main character’s home, job, and hobbies in SpongeBob SquarePants. Then, they will search the home, job, and hobbies of the real organism in its natural habitat in the ocean. Students will compare these to see how well these characters were based on their real organism counterparts!
After the research is complete, students will write a letter to the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg, detailing their support or disapproval with the use of this character from a scientific standpoint.
A rubric is included for both the research and the letter. Students love SpongeBob :). This was a great motivational tool to help them learn different parts of a marine ecosystem and adaptations of organisms.
