Looking for an extension activity for teaching your students about the properties of the states of matter? Have students cut apart 27 different properties of solids, liquids & gases and work in pairs or small groups to classify them into the 3 states based on their internal characteristics and potential changes when heat is added or removed. Blank sorting cards are provided to extend to your own classroom needs! For ease of assessment, each category should have the same number of properties cards and the same sum of the numbered answer cards. After classification is complete, have students use the sorted pieces to answer questions to deepen understanding of content or to extend content for those who finish early or need greater depth of content. Each question has a two property answer which cannot be reused on other questions. An assisted worksheet is provided for lower level learners which provides the sum of the two answers for each question to help learners. Properties include density, volume, shape, viscosity, pressure, surface tension, compressibility, types of solids and changes to matter when heat is added or removed. An answer key is also provided.
