The story of Native American history is a tragic story of broken promises, intolerance, displacement, and bloodshed. On one side of the issue are the Native Americans – a people whose isolation from higher civilizations caused their lifestyles to remain unchanged for 10-12,000 years. On the other side of the issue stood the fast-changing cultures of Europe that collided with the unchanging cultures of the Americas. Native cultures throughout North and South America faced a dilemma – whether or not to remain the same or to adopt new ideas. Native cultures tried in vain to resist the forceful tide of progress and many vanished into extinction as a result. Those who adapted survived. This PSA is a retrospective examining the history of Native Americans leading up to the Closing of the American Frontier in the late 1800’s. The question is open-ended, and not easily answered, if at all – Was the Destruction of Native Culture a Foregone Conclusion or Could It Have Been Prevented? Examine the evidence and you decide!
