Over the years, I have worked as a tutor helping children who are learning French as a second language. Many of them struggled with reading at a young age and would often become frustrated and defeated when presented with unknown or unfamiliar sounds. This summer, I took the time to design and test these worksheets with some of my students and they were a hit!
Each worksheet focuses on a common sound (ex. ou, ch, oi, on) and introduces reading in a fun and simplistic way. First, it combines the sound with another consonant or blend. Then, it offers new vocabulary words (most decodable) which need to be matched to the corresponding picture. Lastly, there are a few simple sentences to be read together.
In a classroom these could be used with the entire class from the beginning of the year, or in small focus groups for children who are lacking awareness of common French sounds. They can be sent home as homework or offered as extension for children who finish work early. I hope you will find them as useful as I have!
