This packet of questions for Catcher in the Rye is 37 pages long and contains 3000 words. It's fairly large.
I use this to supplement the reading in the class. Many driven students read without the support of the reading guide, but many need this extra support. These questions give students something to look for while reading. It guides them toward important parts of the book and helps them stay on course. Also, it provokes them to recall, inquire, and relate to the text.
It includes a variety of questions (who, what, where and why) as well as questions that delve into reasoning and synthesis. Perspective taking is a big part of the questions. Also, inquiring is a skill I really worked on with this.
My students remarked that they enjoyed reading the book. This assignment wasn't necessary for all students but is helpful for many. Often times, I start the whole class with the reading guides, then as the book gets going I drop them. Sometimes, I use them especially for at-risk students or even for extra credit.
