Text Dependent Questions for the Read Alouds "Duck on a Bike" by David Shannon, "Scaredy Mouse" by Alan MacDonald, "My Lucky Day" by Keiko Kasza and "Library Mouse" by Daniel Kirk.
We created the following to help improve questioning in our classrooms. These questions will help increase text understanding. Most textbook questions are not based on text dependency, yet over 80% of common core reading standards require students to complete a text dependent analysis to comprehend the information and relate to the subject.
Teacher evaluations are also requiring that students not only participate but initiate discussions surrounding the text and topic. Students are encouraged to invite one another into the discussion leaving the teacher as a facilitator, not as a director.
Feel free to use this as part of your lesson planning when presenting and discussing read alouds. To encourage students to be central of discussion and participation, cut out the information cards, providing each student with a card that contains a question. Students will then ask their question and initiate the discussion as their page appears in the book.
