This 36 page packet is designed for teachers to use with students in grades 4-8 as they read Paint the Wind, by Pam Munoz Ryan. Included is a ready-to-use 28-page student booklet (plus answer key) that is divided into eight reading assignments with questions and tasks to go with each one. Also included is a vocabulary section-by-section list for the teacher and a bookmark master to be copied and given to students to keep track of vocabulary words while reading the book and using the student booklet. Created by Jean Martin.
The questions and tasks in the student booklet cover and reinforce the skills that good readers need to understand and maintain. These include comprehension, visualization, point-of-view, summarizing, connecting to the text, identifying character traits, vocabulary tasks, and identifying the setting. The packet gives students lots of practice in writing to explain their thinking and to demonstrate their understanding.
The student booklet is designed for independent work so that students can work on this in class while the teacher is meeting with another group. In my classroom students were responsible for completing one reading assignment with the accompanying questions each week. I gave them three or four periods per week to complete one assignment. They would then meet once a week with me (or an aide or a parent), along with the other students reading the same book (we called this a "book club" meeting) to discuss the book and review the assignments.
Paint the Wind in a nutshell:
Written by award-winning author, Pam Munoz Ryan, this book is a great choice for creating powerful discussions. Maya is an 11 year old girl who has been living with her controlling grandmother since the death of her parents. Once Grandmother dies, Maya goes to live with the other side of the family and experiences a whole new life full of warmth, love, horses, and learning about who she really is. An especially good read for the horse lover!
Appropriate for students in grades 4-7. Reading level approximately 5th grade.
