Paired passages and paired texts are becoming more prevalent in classrooms across the country. Many state assessments have started using paired passages and texts instead of single passages. This resource will provide you with the necessary resources you need to tackle paired passages in your classroom.
I created this resource to fill the need for more paired passage instruction in my own personal classroom. I wanted a versatile resource that could be used for independent practice, RTI, homework, or even centers. I wanted something that would allow me to use the paired passages in many ways to really help my students have a deeper understanding of the topic and the connection between the two passages.
This resource includes 4 sets of paired passages.
Each set includes the following:
Two passages that are paired by topic
6 text dependent questions for each passage
4 text dependent questions that require the student to use both passages
Text dependent questions listed above available in task card format. (This option would be ideal for centers.)
3 text dependent essay prompts (narrative, opinion, and informational)
3 text dependent printables:
~Find the Evidence: requires the student to find evidence in the passages and paraphrase their evidence.
~Context Clues: requires the students to define words from both texts using context clues.
~Compare and Contrast: a compare and contrast printable that requires the students to compare some aspect of the passages.
The topics for the sets are:
Set 1: Informational Text about Google and Informational Text about the Game Boy
Set 2: Fiction Text about Playing in the Snow and Informational Text about Staying Safe in Winter Weather
Set 3: Informational Text about Not Feeding Animals and Fiction Text about a Bear in a Neighborhood
Set 4: Informational Text about Immigrants of the 1900s and Informational Text about Present Day Immigrants
Check out the preview for some free posters and a look into the sets.
