Task cards with factual and opinion questions give students the opportunity to show what they have learned about human prehistory. In addition, there is a word search puzzle with 3 levels of difficulty and a crossword puzzle with a word bank that you can use with early finishers, as a challenge, as homework, or just for fun. The same words are used in all the puzzles to aid your students' learning. For more vocabulary practice, a table with 10 multiple meaning words is included to help ELLs and other students learn the different meanings of those words.
You can use the charts in several ways:
* The filled-in charts can be utilized as a basic source of information for your students.
* You can orally present the material to your classes as a listening comprehension activity and have students write down the facts in the blank charts.
* You can cut the information on the filled-in charts into strips and do matching activities with them.
* The charts can also be used as study guides and can even be adapted to be used as tests.
* Once the charts are completed, they can be used as the basis for writing activities.
Eight suggestions for using the charts are included in this resource.
Many U.S. textbooks do not include the Mesolithic or Copper Ages when teaching about prehistory. However, they are discussed in some European countries and my college archaeology course covered those ages so I am including them in this resource. If your curriculum does not teach about the Mesolithic Age or the Copper Age as separate time periods, you can just omit those charts from your lessons. The resource is designed so you can include them if you wish but you do not have to use them if they are not part of your curriculum.
If you work in a Common Core or WIDA Consortium state, a list of the ELA standards addressed in this resource and 3 sample MPIs are also included for your convenience.
Compiling the information in these charts lets students easily compare and contrast details about these 6 prehistoric ages. Whether used for note-taking tasks, reading comprehension purposes, test review, or as the basis for writing or speaking activities, using these charts will help your students better understand the chronology and development of early humans in prehistory.
I loved teaching my students about this era of human prehistory! Suggestions for using this resource remotely:
a) Use the Google Drive version.
b) Use the materials on Zoom or a similar platform. You can display the filled-in charts to your entire class to read or share each filled-in chart with different breakout groups and then have them report back to the whole class about each time period; students can read about the time periods and answer the questions on the blank charts. In breakout groups, students can discuss the questions on the task cards. You can display the puzzles on your screen and students can do the them together in breakout groups or as a whole class, by looking at a puzzle that is displayed and then volunteering the answers.
c) Send photocopies of blank and/or filled-in charts you want students to use or email students the charts and tell students to print them out if they have access to a printer. If using the blank charts, tell students to read their textbook or search online for answers to the questions and write answers in the appropriate sections on the charts. If you wish, have students send/email their work back to you so you check it. If using the filled-in charts, tell the students to read the charts. For the task cards, puzzles, and multiple meaning words tasks, send photocopies home or email copies to students and tell them to print them out if they have access to a printer. Tell students to write answers to the task card and multiple meaning words questions and to do the puzzles, then send/email the work back to you so you can check it. Alternatively, you can also send home/email the answer keys and tell students to correct the puzzles themselves.
