This is an interactive and highly engaging simulation that involves the disputed land borders of the Gaza Strip, West Bank, and Golan Heights. It involves 4 role play positions: Palestinian and Israeli role play characters, Interrogation Committee, and the Undecided Panel. The objective of the debate simulation is to answer this question: Who should control the pre-1967 borders - the Israelis or the Palestinians? 5 issues will be the focus: Jerusalem, Security, Borders, Refugees, and Settlements. Role play characters will become an "expert" on one of these issues, with the opportunity to share their information during the debate.
Each role play position is thoroughly explained on the student handout, and each position will research, formulate opinions, and create a "back" story that will be shared during the 2 day simulation. This is completely student centered as the interrogation committee facilitates and controls the pace of the debate. An outline of the simulation procedures is included, along with a photo of the classroom layout. Research links are also provided for students on the handout.
I use simulations quite often in my classroom, and former students always tell me how much they appreciated them, for it gave them opportunities to reflect, debate, and become involved in a real world experiences!
