This mini book uses a predictable, patterned rhyming text. The location word “near” is featured throughout the book, and nature related vocabulary is targeted. This book allows very young children to "read" the book themselves.
The twelve picture cards can be used to pre-teach the vocabulary, or for matching picture to word to text. A small panda picture is included to allow students to have active participation with each page by placing it near the objects named on each page of the book.
Ask the students if they’ve ever seen a panda bear on TV,in a book or even at a zoo. What did it look like? What color are panda bears? What country panda bears come from? You can write or draw their ideas on chart paper.
“Today we are going to read a little book called ‘Panda Near the Butterflies’. Before we do, let’s look at some pictures of some things that are in the book.” Show the vocabulary cards one at a time--either ask the students to label the objects spontaneously or teach the words. I usually do a pre and post-test on the words.
