Thank you for looking at my movie companion packet for El Laberinto del fauno (Pan's Labyrinth), from the Mexican director Guillermo del Toro.
I have had great success using this movie in Spanish classes from Spanish 3-Spanish 5. Much of the action can be interpreted through visual cues, which supports our world language students. The film also presents a wonderful opportunity for collaborating with colleagues in the art or history departments, as the movie is rich in visual imagery and it takes place during the Spanish Civil War.
The movie contains violent imagery. Before purchasing this packet, please watch the movie carefully to determine if it is appropriate for your students. I suggest you speak with your department chair or an administrator before showing it to your students.
This product is intended for use with upper-intermediate or advanced Spanish students who can watch the movie in Spanish with Spanish subtitles. I recommend that you show the movie over the span of one week, allowing time for your students to preview each day's packet materials at the beginning of class, and to review their answers before leaving the room.
In this packet, the movie is divided into 7-13 minute sections. The title headers for these sections refer to the chapters on the movie DVD. For those who are streaming the movie, time stamps are provided. Each section includes:
• translations of key vocabulary for pre-teaching
• Spanish summary sentences in random order, with lines for students to write sequencing numbers as they watch
• fill-in-the blank comprehension questions with a word bank
In addition, the last page of the packet includes three comprehensive essay questions.
