This is a summative assessment that assesses the scientific method and the process of writing up a lab report using paper airplanes. This assessment can also be easily differentiated based on the level of your students. This activity allows for independent work and accountability, partner or small group collaboration, and whole class data sharing so everyone is involved.

This assessment utilizes STEM applications as students build a controlled airplane together of your choice and then test the flight distance. Students are then given variables to change in order to compare the flight distance. After gathering all of their data students write-up a scientific lab report and graph their results. A great discussion can take place after the lab report is complete as each team can report out their results and as a class the students can figure out which variables had the greatest impact on the design of the airplane. This assessment also includes a student and teacher rubric. Students assess their lab report as part of a reflection process before handing it if for a final grade.
In order to assess this lab I have included a regular rubric along with the Next Chapter MYP Criteria B & C Level 3 Science rubrics. In order to make the MYP assessing easier for both teachers and students I have created task-specific descriptors that are found next to the actual rubric descriptors that focus on the activity. These task-specific descriptors also allow students the opportunity to better understand the MYP terminology and what they are being assessed on before they receive their final level of performance.
