The moveable alphabet is a necessary material in all early childhood or primary Montessori classrooms. Once children have mastery of more than half of the phonetic alphabet, they are given an opportunity to build words. The moveable alphabet allows children to pull letters from the box and physically build the words rather than trying to pull from their minds. This gives children the opportunity to realize that letters work together to build words and with time this will naturally lead them to reading.
Traditionally the moveable alphabet contains wooden letters in a large wooden box with 26 compartments containing each letter. Sometimes an eager speller finds that there just aren’t enough “e’s” in the box. Other times a letter may travel home in someone’s pocket. This material is expensive to replace and takes time to order.
This paper alphabet allows you to have all of the letters your children need. Perhaps you only have one moveable alphabet in your classroom and would like a second set. Simply print a few copies, cut, and place in a plastic craft box. Bead, tackle, tool, and embroidery thread boxes all come with little storage spaces perfect for holding these 2’’x2’’ letters. Great for home schoolers or classrooms with a budget!
