Learn 10 word families, develop fine motor skills, and decorate the classroom using this fun rhyming book. It includes two sections: Paper Chains and Word Family Trees.
Read each word and decide which word family it belongs to. Color each word according to the keys. Cut along the lines to create 3 strips. Use a stapler or tape to create paper chains.
Have your students collaborate by joining their chains. Hang the chains around your classroom or on a tree. Using this book, each student may create 6 loops. Combine the loops with construction paper to make the chains longer, or combine the chains with my fun math paper chain books.
Word Family Trees
This book contains 10 word family trees. The word families covered are as follows: -at, -et, -ag, -ed, -ug, -op, -ad, -in, -un, -ig.
First, cut out the ornaments that go with the word family tree.
Next, sound out the words on the tree. Practice saying the word ending found in the star. The initial sounds are the letters on the ornaments on the tree. Put the initial sounds with the ending to create words.
For instance, the –at tree can make the following words: rat, cat, bat, mat, hat.
Glue each ornament to the correct initial sound and color the tree.
Combine this book with Holiday Math: Paper Chains
and Holiday Multiplication: Paper Chains
to create longer chains. For more learning, measure the length of your classroom chain. Measure it using rulers and a tape measure. You can also have your students measure it in creative ways, such as in body length, human feet, or candy canes.
