The idea is to get the student to think how versatile paper is rather than it being just a plain piece of paper. I start out by showing various folds that are really simple like an accordion fold or just folding the paper into three's. I demonstrate how its now possible to make it stand up now that its folded and that if I place another sheet of paper between two folded sheets that I can create a little tower. Then the fun begins as I give a ream of cheap copy paper out and ask my students to construct a tower that will reach the ceiling. There is no adhesive used and I let them know to expect the towers to collapse but to not let that stop them. Its always a really fun project for any age group and helps kids get into a team mindset which is also a nice benefit. Their elation when they get their tower to the ceiling is wonderful!
