This analytical writing assignment is a cumulative interdisciplinary essay that challenges students to analyze a piece of art related to the American Revolutionary War in order to: describe the work with art vocabulary, describe the content and action taking place, evaluate the mood and tone, hypothesize about the artist’s purpose and intended audience, consider the public’s response/effect of the work, and relate connections to current events.
It is differentiated or tiered into three levels that appeal to:
-The general education population of students
-Exceptional Children/Special Education students.
Three different grading rubric are included for each tier.
A paragraph outline/ paragraph planner is included that can be distributed or used for instruction.
Learning outcomes / Students will be able to:
1. Use primary sources to interpret various historical perspectives
2. Use art vocabulary to evaluate art
3. Understand the role of visual arts in the U.S. in relation to history and geography
4. Use convincing and logical arguments to respond to art
