Contents: This document contains 10 versions of the same paragraph, with the following characteristics:
- Perfect formatting
- Name at the bottom of the paragraph
- Too large font
- Non-academic font
- Single spaced
- Multiple spaced
- No title
- No/insufficient indent
- Centered text
- No name/ heading
I’ve provided this activity in MS Word form so that you can edit the heading date, instructor name, etc, and so that you can change and add versions that are suitable for your class’ formatting rules and your students’ formatting struggles.
Instructions for the Teacher: Post all versions of the paragraph on walls throughout the room, and label them with numbers or letters. Students work with a partner to determine what kind of mistake is present in each copy of the paragraph, and to identify the “perfect” paragraph. They should take notes as they discuss with their partner. When students have finished taking notes on all the versions, come back together as a class to discuss.
Activity also includes expansion activities.
