Identifying breaks in unity is a skill that will enable students to better focus their own writing so that it supports the topic sentence / thesis statement.
Task cards are perfect for students who get easily overwhelmed with multi-part instructions or too much text. Each task card has one paragraph. Students will read and look for the sentence that breaks unity. (Three cards have two sentences that break unity.)
An answer sheet for students to write upon is provided, but to save more time, have them write the answers on their own paper.
An answer key is provided to show which sentences break unity and to give sample justifications, but teachers should use their own judgment when checking how each student justified his/her answers and allow any appropriate response.
