ABOUT THIS PRODUCT:

I use this activity and these pages to help my students create a bank of ideas from which to draw as writers and to then compose quality paragraphs. Here's what I do...

Provide each student with a copy of the idea bank template.

Select a topic to begin with. Tell the students, I am going to play a song. While it is playing, you may write down all of the ideas that pop into your mind for the category we are working on. Do not worry about spelling. When the music stops, look to me for the next direction.

I then play about 45 seconds of a popular, fast-paced song.

When I stop the music I say, I am going to ask some of you to share an idea that you wrote down for that category. If you hear someone share an idea that interests you then you may add it to your list. This helps my students who struggle with generating ideas to create a list for themselves.

I repeat this process for each of the boxes. I base the number of boxes we fill in each session on the level of attentiveness from the group at that time.

When the list is completed we add it to the writer's notebooks and the students use them throughout the year. They highlight each item as they write about them.

There is a blank grid for you or your students to create your own categories as well.

The kit also includes:

a top down web which have found to be the best graphic organizer for young writers to plan their paragraphs.
