Paragraphs Part 2: Topic Sentences (Editable PPT)

This editable PowerPoint uses simple language to explain what a topic sentence is, parts of a topic sentence, and how a topic sentence connects to the detail sentences and conclusion sentences that follow it. This resource can be used with a FREE notes sheet (including answer sheet) for learners to take notes. Or, the notes sheet can be used as a quick assessment to see what learners remember after you give the presentation.

The resource begins with the basics:

• A topic sentence tells the main idea of the paragraph.
• A topic sentence has s topic and the main point.
• The topic is whom or what the paragraph is about, and the main point is what your paragraph says about the topic.

An example paragraph is shown. Then, three new paragraphs are presented. Learners choose the topic sentence supported by the detail sentences and conclusion sentence shown.

Correct answers are provided, and each is explained with key parts of highlighted and underlined to help learners follow along as the teacher speaks. Each slide includes a script to guide teachers in teaching the lesson to help minimize prep time!
