A simple activity that shows students how parallax is used to measure the distance to stars. Students will measure parallax (apparent movement) at a variety of distances from a target object (pencil) using a ruler and meter stick. The materials, procedure, and result tables are provided, as is custom graph paper to plot the relationship between parallax and distance. This resource also includes a demonstration to introduce the topic to students as well as notes and images that could be projected with a document camera.
