This grammar mini-lesson focuses on parallel structure. I integrate the teaching of grammar as students work through the writing process. I usually teach parallel structure during a writing assignment that is argumentative/persuasive in nature. One slide in this short presentation, for example, includes an excerpt from Martin Luther King, Jr's "I Have a Dream Speech." You will notice that I do not include a lot of examples. Instead, I work with students on the concept of phrases "weighing the same" and have them come up to the whiteboard and write examples using phrases/clauses that we have studied previously. Finally, you will notice that the last slide is an invitation for students to write their own original sentence using parallel structure. This is usually completed on a sticky note or notecard and displayed in class.
