This lesson works! Students will learn the what, how, and why of paraphrasing. Teach your middle school students how to correctly paraphrase in two simple steps: change key words and change structure.
This easy to follow PowerPoint provides information that could be copied into student notes, clear examples that model paraphrasing, hands on opportunities for student practice, a basic assignment that incorporates research, and a summarizing activity. Instructions are included for students working in collaborative pairs. Higher order thinking is promoted through analysis and evaluation of paraphrasing examples that are given to students as well as examples they create themselves.
This lesson could take one class period or longer.
Extension idea: In pairs or individually, have students choose one topic or theme for their research idea in the assignment. This could even be used as basis for a later research project.
