Need a way to help your students overcome the daunting Shakespeare? After watching looks of terror come over the faces of my students when uttering Shakespeare's name, I developed this quick worksheet/game to help students overcome their fear while adding a bit of modern day fun to it.
Students will practice paraphrasing sonnets to determine the overall meaning of each poem. In the process, they unlock the lyrics of each mystery song. This product allows for 4 separate practices (I do: explicit teach of paraphrasing, We do: practice together, They do: work in teams to paraphrase and find the mystery song, and a final You do: where students independently paraphrase). Be careful... ssshhhhhh... the last sonnet is the real deal, not a song.
By the time your students work through the iambic pentameter and Shakespearean terminology in these 4 examples, they are sure to find it much easier to find meaning with future Shakespeare texts and poetry in general.
