Parched is Melanie Crowder's first novel. This realistic novel has multiple themes that interest older readers (survival, international war, narrators/point of view perspective, social issues, animals, and death), but it has a text level and short chapters that appeal especially to reluctant readers. It may not be a book that all students are prepared to or ready to read without adult support. This lit log can be used to assist a teacher/adult in a read aloud discussion, for students who need more support in literature circles, or for guided reading instruction. The questions and personal responses can be used to guide oral discussions and/or used as determined by the teacher for written responses. There is one question and space for a personal response for each chapter. A page of personal response starter sentences and end of book activity choices are included. Also, an answer key for the chapter questions is included. The main focus skills are: asking/answering questions, describing characters, setting, and events, and distinguishing differences in the points of view of characters.
