This handbook has been designed to provide parents with concrete strategies for coaching their child to become a better writer. Perhaps they are unsure of what questions to ask the teacher, or are not familiar with the terminology used in the classroom on a daily basis. The information in this handbook has been compiled for parent use, to help them access and understand the language of the 6+1 Traits, that as a puzzle, fit together to produce solid writing that is enjoyable to read.
The 6+1 Traits model is being used across the nation, and it encourages students to focus on the essential elements of good writing. While it may seem like a challenging feat at first glance, it is really an art that will evolve only with practice.
With our ever-changing NYS standards and exams, as well as the standards set within the classroom, the goal should be for parents and teachers to be partners. This will yield positive results and increased student achievement. Use this handbook to establish that partnership and to develop a common language to help students achieve to their potential.
