Parent Invitation GEI / SIT meeting General Education Intervention Team
If you are like me, you struggle to involve parents, especially in important meetings such as the General Education Intervention Team or the Student Improvement Team (GEI or SIT). That is why I devised this written invitation that I use to notify / remind parents of an upcoming meeting for their child(ren).
The letter includes a basic description of the GEI / SIT team’s role in the child’s education and warmly invites parents to be a part of that process. I have found this to be extremely effective in increasing parent involvement with struggling students. It is easy to use and can be personalized with your school’s information. It should provide you a basic framework that will enable you to get parents in the seats when interventions are being planned.
Additionally, I have found that when parents are involved and know of the efforts (as they happen) that are being taken to assist struggling students that it is much easier to obtain consent if testing appears to be needed at a later date. By letting parents know all of the things you are doing to support their child, they understand the importance of possible testing and will support your efforts.
