This download is for a Parent Letter to accompany a unique alternative to Reading Logs created by former teacher and literacy specialist Ekuwah Moses. You can find a copy of the free Reading Log here:
The Parent Letter can be sent home to families to help explain the concept of this new Reading Log, so that they can begin to help encourage their child’s love of reading at home.
The letter lets parents know that this is different than a traditional Reading Log! No trying to remember titles or keeping track of how long their child read for. Just reading…anything, anywhere, any way, with anyone, and for any length of time.
The Reading Log itself gives a wide variety of practical and FUN ideas for reading opportunities outside the classroom. A few examples: read a book that became a movie, read with a flashlight, read the back of cereal boxes, read to the family pet or stuffed animals, read to family & friends on Skype or Facetime, play Scrabble, etc.
The Parent Letter also provides this quote to help families get on board:
“We are simply listing habits of lifelong readers and providing a choice. Lifelong readers do not read for prizes, count pages, or write titles of books. Rather, readers who read for pleasure enjoy reading on the go, select a variety of materials, enjoy sharing or comparing thoughts with others, and are always on the hunt for the next thrill” –Ekuwah Moses
Hopefully you find this Parent Letter to be a useful tool in encouraging parents to help raise a lifelong reader!
