After each writing unit, my students choose one piece of writing to take through the publishing process. After they choose one piece, they are left with several other pieces that I know Mom and Dad would love to look at and read. I created this half page parent letter to suggest ideas on how parents can share the writing pieces that were done in class, but not necessarily taken all the way through the writing process. I simply staple the parent letter to the rest of the student's writing pieces and then send home. This letter has over 10 suggestions for celebrating writing together. Some of the following are examples;
*Read a writing piece at the dinner table after everybody has finished eating.
*Give a writing piece to a family member or family friend.
*Video tape yourself reading a writing piece and then watch it.
*Have a family member help you add more to a writing piece.
*Choose another writing piece to turn into a book. Make a book cover for it.
*Use paints or markers to add to the illustrations.
*Buddy read a writing piece with a family member.
