Explore Paris in your French class with these thematic lessons that use realia and authentic texts in French all while connecting to disciplines such as math, language arts, social studies, business tech, music, fine arts, and home economics! Ideal for a level 2 French class or higher, this 100 page thematic unit includes 5 different lessons using 5 different text authentic text types (a song, a brochure, maps, menus, a recipe). Here is a short list of what types of activities students will do in the lessons in the thematic unit on Paris:
-identify famous historical monuments of Paris and plan a mock itinerary to visit them using the metro system
-create a scale model of one of the monuments using images from Google 3D Warehouse along with a written explanation of the model
-orally present their model to the class
-understand and analyze the song, "A Paris" by Francis Lemarque (sung by Yves Montand)
-identify figurative language in the song
-write and illustrate a poem about their own town in the springtime that imitates the personification in the song, "A Paris"
-use metro maps to plan trips from different monuments and landmarks around Paris
-calculate the most cost effective method when purchasing metro fare in both US dollars and euros
-read authentic menus from authentic Parisian cafés
-calculate the cost of a meal at a café (adding prices and tip amount with percentages)
-create their own restaurant menu based on the texts read
-read and understand a traditional French recipe for making crêpes
-create their own Parisien “crêperie” in which in large groups of students make their own menu for crêpes, actually make the crêpes to order during class using a simple crêpe maker, and sell them competitively to classmates who will “purchase” them
You spread these lessons and projects out throughout the year, or your can do them as a unit. Students in my French II classes have a blast every year doing these projects!
