One genre of teachable text that has been gaining popularity in recent years is the podcast. We are experiencing a revolution in radio and recorded texts. There is a growing body of smart, well produced, and well researched programming out there, and it is an authentic and effective way for teachers to get their kids engaged in non-fiction texts. Many of these stories include interviews, music, sound effects, and in many cases the writing is exceptional.
This package includes assignments for the Radiolab episode "The Perfect Yellow."
For this episode you will receive:
-1 comprehension assignment
-1 vocabulary assignment
-1 argument writing assingment
-1 summary/informative writing assignment
-1 narrative writing assignment
This resource was designed to engage students with a quality text, while giving the teacher many different options on how to incorporate it into their curriculum map. Each lesson in the Focus, Listen, and Learn series includes five different assignments which targets five different strands of the common core. After listening to the podcast in class, or assigning it for students to listen to it on their own, the teacher can choose to focus on comprehension, vocab, argument writing, summary, or narrative writing. Wherever you are on your curriculum map, there is a lesson that fits with what you are doing at that time.
These printable lessons are perfect for a sub day or for those “in between unit” days. The podcasts themselves usually run between 20 and 40 minutes, so it is designed to be taught in one period. Don't know what you are doing in class tomorrow? Run off some copies, push play, and don’t feel guilty for giving them “busy work,” because it isn’t. These lessons are common core aligned and dynamic enough to meet whatever needs your students may have at the time.
As with all of my products, these lessons are designed with specific learning targets and self reflection, so that students always clearly understand what skills they are being expected to practice and develop. These learning targets are clearly marked on the worksheets themselves, and this also makes for faster grading and assessment.
