This is a worksheet inspired from Van de Walle's Mystery Mats activity.
Students are given the whole of either 20, 100, & 500. They are also given a part: a drawing of tens and ones or another number.
Kids use place value to help them decompose these numbers and find the missing part. They would also be using friendly numbers and adding up to find their answer.
Example: If the whole is 100, and the part is 3 tens and 3 ones. Kids will likely think 7 more would be 40, then 60 more to get to 100.
There are 3 different sheets for high, medium, and low learners.
