The idea for this activity came from Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics Grades K-3 by John A. Van de Walle and LouAnn H. Lovin.
Make multiple copies of the strips. Laminate and cut out the strips. There are strips for numbers #1-10. Students will need more strips of #1-4.
The idea is for students to build a number in parts. Students are to create a number using different combinations. For example, if they are to make the number 5, they may show 3 and 2, and 1 and 4.
Work mats are provided for each number.
