Part-Part-Whole with Dominoes supports PPW Concepts, Commutative Property of Addition, Related Facts, Fact Families, Missing Addends, and more. The concepts spiral upwards in difficulty through the four lessons outlined below:
Lesson #1 – PPW Concepts, Commutative Property, Addition Equations
Lesson #2 – PPW Concepts, Commutative Property, Addition Equations, Missing Addends
Lesson #3 – PPW Concepts, Commutative Property, Addition and Subtraction Equations, Related Facts
Lesson #4 – PPW Concepts, Commutative Property, Addition and Subtraction Equations, Related Facts, Missing Addends, (Dominoes have numbers vs. dots… more abstract. Students can use counters or draw pictures if needed.)
The CCSS for Math list 8 Mathematical Practices to be woven through our instruction. These lessons support all of the practices, but the third page of each lesson works specifically towards these practices:
#1 – Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
#3 – Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Have fun… and please let me know if you have any questions. Lisa Buchholz
