Your students will love this highly interactive and engaging Partial Product lesson, and you will love the minimal preparation and ease of use!

This lesson can stand alone or be used in conjunction with my Partial Product Multiplication YouTube instructional video! I created both the lesson plan and video to work hand-in-hand to support student engagement, knowledge, and achievement!

The lesson plan is aligned with the Common Core State Standards and the Ontario Math Curriculum Expectations. By the end of the lesson, students will:

1. Demonstrate that they are reflecting on and monitoring their thinking to help clarify their understanding;

2. Demonstrate an understanding of expanded form and the distributive property by breaking one or more factors into addends;

3. Solve problems involving the multiplication of multi-digit whole numbers using partial products;

4. Apply partial product multiplication to a variety of situations including complex, multi-step problem-solving situations, explorations, and investigations.

Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison.
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range 10–90 (e.g., 9 × 80, 5 × 60) using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
