These task cards are great for practicing the partial product multiplication strategy for 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication. Half the cards are standard 2-digit multiplication sentences. The other half of the cards are the partial product solutions that match the multiplication sentences but some of the numbers are missing, requiring students to use algebraic thinking and working backward. They can be used as two different sets for cooperative learning structures.
-Print task cards single-sided and cut apart. Print on card stock or laminate for durability. Print enough recording sheets for each student.
-Select enough pairs of cards so that each student in your class has one card. See answer key to determine matching cards.
-Pass out cards so each student has one card.
-Turn on music and have students mingle about the room trading cards as they mingle so that the cards are being shuffled.
-When the music stops, students should look at the card they have in their hand and solve. Half the cards are standard multiplication sentences, and half the cards are partial products with missing factors or products that need to be determined.
-Once students have a solution, they should look for the person in the room with a card with the same solution.
-Students should cross check their work with each other and record their answers on the recording sheets.
-Turn on another song and repeat steps 4 through 8.
