Graphic Organizers: Partial Product (Ladder Method) Division, Standard Algorithm
Self Checking Activity
***No Prep Product***
We all know that students struggle with long division. Have you or your students tried the partial product method, known as the ladder method of division? Students grasp the standard algorithm better after first being taught partial products. This lesson shows both method and allows students to use whatever method they are most comfortable with.
One of the big common core changes is that students are expected to be able to deconstruct common algorithms and explain how they work. This lesson teaches division in different ways, Partial Product and the standard algorithm. Students are supported with graphic organizers which break things down step by step. Each portion of this lesson contains practice problems for students to test out each of the multiplication methods. This lesson concludes with a self checking activity, which allows students to examine their own work for mistakes. Lastly their are tasks cards designed to model standardized test questions.
You will be impressed with the results.
