Engage your students and help them review participles and participial phrases with this fun game. There are four rounds. In rounds one and two, students identify the participles and participial phrases. They must also identify the noun or pronoun modified in round two. In round three, students rewrite the sentences in order to fix the dangling or misplaced participles. In round four, students rewrite the sentences and combine them using participles. All that you will need is the ability to project a power point presentation, a ball (soft texture), some dark tape, and a trash can.
Research shows that students often learn best when they can move, and this game motivates them with their love of sports. When you put your students in heterogeneous groups for a game with friendly competition, it is an excellent way to meet the needs of all of your students and reward them for their success.
The power point presentation includes the following slides: review slides, game slides, rules for the students, teacher instructions, and a key. This activity is effective for guided practice after the concept of participles has already been introduced, and the game can be followed by independent practice. With this game, you will be amazed that your students will want to learn grammar!
