PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This resource includes:
- 15 sets of pairs of cards (enough for 30 students total)
- ideas for using the cards

These partner picker cards are a fun and different way to create partners for classroom activities. They can be used in any subject area whenever you need partners. Choosing partners is sometimes tricky to manage. When students decide, they often choose their best friends or those they are most comfortable with. The opportunity to meet new people or learn from the ideas of others is lost. When I match students using objective methods (such as these cards), I find that I am pleasantly surprised by how well different students work together. Students often end up starting friendships with their new partners!

These cards can be used to find partners in two ways. For an easy way to match, print two copies of the cards and have students match like foods together. For example, the donut card would match with the other donut card. This would work well for younger grades such as Kindergarten and First Grade. You may want to start with this approach and then try the second option (described below) later in the year.

For a more complex way to match, print just one set of cards. Instead of matching the same foods together, students match companion foods, like salt and pepper, hamburger and fries, and pancakes and maple syrup. If students need support, you can show page 4 which has all matches listed.

Directions for using Partner Picker cards:

1. Print cards on card stock or regular paper.
2. Laminate for durability.
3. Place all cards in a bag, basket, or other container.
4. When it is time for a partner activity, simply give each student a card or pass the bag around and have each student take one.
6. Ask students to “find their match.” I like to have students stand up and hold their card facing out. Then, as they walk around the room they can see all the different possibilities and find the matching card.

These cards can be used in other ways, too!
- Getting to know you: Pass these cards out to students on the first day of school. Students will match up an share a getting to know you question you have given them. To keep this activity going for several rounds, have students drop their card and grab another card. Then match up again with their new partner and answer the same question or a different one.

- Adjectives: show a card to students during a lesson on adjectives. Ask them to list as many words as they can to describe the food. You can also tape the card on a large dry erase board, and create a word web using the adjectives students named.

- Writing: ask students to choose a favorite combination from the cards, such as pancakes and maple syrup. What makes this combination so delicious? Explain.

- Persuasive Writing: ask students to choose a combination that isn’t common, such peanut butter and bacon. Describe why this unusual combination is delicious. Use persuasive words to encourage others to try it.

- Nutrition: sort cards by healthy/not healthy or by food group

- Memory/Concentration
