This sheet includes an outline map of South America, with the CAPITALS of Spanish-speaking countries labeled. Each student will use a map to keep track of who will be their partner in each capital.
It helps students use the target language to set up partners for future work dates and at the same time is culturally-appropriate, reinforcing geography of Spanish-speaking countries. Each person takes his/her own sheet around the room asking other students if they are available to work in a specific city. If both individuals are available in that city, each one writes the other's name on that line.
The target language is modeled for students on the sheet so that they can refer to it as they talk with each other. The question "Can you work with me in (name of city)?" is followed by both affirmative and negative possible answers.
When students find a capital city they are both available to work in together, they fill in the line on their own sheet with their partner's name. Then they move on to another classmate to try to find a match. They can only fill in the line next to the city if it is blank on both students' sheets.
I tell students they can only put someone in one spot on the sheet. Often students will have a blank space at the end of the time that you give them to fill their sheets. This is fine, because on the day that everyone is working in Bogotá, someone may be absent or there may be two or four people without partners. You can then match them up.
