The Newspaper Anchor Mat can be used by students to organize and record key information related to a newspaper. Some of the sections on the anchor mat include: purpose, sections, text features, and style of writing. Students are encouraged to fill in the sections on the anchor mat with text, symbols, and pictures. The goal is to have students target concise, yet specific, details to demonstrate key understandings.
Newspaper Puzzle Word Match includes 14 words related to parts of the newspaper along with a description of each part. Students work to match the words with their descriptions. Parts of the newspaper that are included in this match are: editorial, sports article, national news article, classifieds, feature article, international news article, column, local news article, sidebar, letter to the editor, review, business article, obituary, advertisement.
In the News Scavenger Hunt includes 24 task cards that require students to explore a newspaper and the different parts of a newspaper. After students complete a task card, students can record their answers on the recording sheet or use their classroom journal.
Based on student readiness and background knowledge, it might be helpful to review some of the terms found on the task cards. Some of the key terms referenced in the task cards include: loaded words, classifieds, index, review, sports article, weather, column, headline, byline, advertisement, text written to entertain/persuade, photo, comic strip, political cartoon, caption, bias, statistics, business section, movie guide, feature article, local news article, logos, pathos.
