This Edible Plant Unit is a interactive way to use Inquiry Science Centers. Students learn which parts of the plant they are eating with their vegetables and it is a great way to reinforce why we need to eat vegetables.

Students will get to do over 6 inquiry based science centers all with the theme on which plants are edible and what part of the plant they eat. Everything you need is included in the unit, except the Vegetables which are optional as well.

  • Over 6 Different Edible Plant Inquiry Activities: Each one of these is interactive and can be done individually, in small groups, or whole group.
  • Detailed Teacher Directions for each activity: There are step by step lesson plans so that the teacher doesn't need to plan them out.
  • Student Directions for most activities: Separate instructions written just for students. This can make the activity more independent.
  • Color Plant Posters (2 Sided) * Available in Printer Friendly Version as well. The posters can be used for many of the activities and can also be used if you do not have the vegetables.
  • Introduction to Plant Parts Mini Lesson: This is designed to be the first lesson that the students will do. It can be a review on the parts of plants or give students the basics on the parts of plants.
  • Assessment Activities: Some of the activities can be used as an assessment. There is a pre-assessment included as well.
  • Two Edible Plant Mini Books: These books are used for one of the activities. They are interactive because the student is writing in them and coloring. They are differentiated for 2 levels.
  • Mini Plant Posters: Some of the plant posters come in a mini version.

This unit can be use for students individually, small groups or whole group.

Individually: in Literacy or Science, it can also be sent home for homework.

Small Groups: Student can go to various Science Inquiry Centers set up around the room to do the activities or students can work in small groups where each group is doing the same activity.

Whole Group: The whole class does the same activity at the same time. Give students a chance to talk to each other about their answers.

These activities can be spread out among several days.

Check out our blog article to see how this is used in the classroom.

The mini books and activities are differentiated to two levels. The activities also have various extensions and additional activities or ways to do the lessons that work best for different levels.
